Founder & Operations Director Pammy Johal

An outdoor education practitioner since 1979.  Holds a BA in Recreational Studies specialising in Outdoor Education and Community Development.  She is regarded as an expert in her field for engaging BAME communities.  Her work has featured in the media. She is passionate about discovery and journeys in remote wilderness areas of the world – on her bike, skis, foot, dogsled and whatever else is thrown at her!  Founders message.

Governance Independent Director Dexter Duboulay

Over 30 yrs experience of working in and with the voluntary sector and social enterprises. Dexter is currently an Assistant Professor  at Coventry University, on the Board of the Midlands largest BAME social housing provider and a social enterprise providing support to teenage parents, vulnerable adults and families. Dexter brings a commitment to good governance to ensure participants and stakeholders gain maximum benefit from their involvement with Backbone. Dexter gets great enjoyment from walking and cycle touring.

Governance Independent Director Jenny Isherwood

Jenny has worked with Backbone since 2010 delivering a range of qualifications and is delighted to be on Board!  Jenny is a qualified instructor for biking, climbing, hiking, skiing and has been an active member of the Scottish Mountain Rescue for over 15yrs.  Her experience allows her to facilitate outdoor learning and upholding a high standard of safety management.  Jenny is currently running First Aid Borders Ltd and Head of Outdoor Education at The Edinburgh Academy where she works hard to develop a programme that fits with the pedagogy that she believes in.  That learners should have agency over their learning, be taught skills that are relevant and transferable.  Jenny loves any activity in the great outdoors!
